History and Legacy

Monyaz: A Legacy Carried in the Blood

Born in the heart of Sihuapan, in San Andrés Tuxtla, Veracruz, Monyaz is the embodiment of a centuries-old tradition. Led by Dolores Campos, our brand honors the roots of a family dedicated to agriculture, preserving the legacy of her paternal grandmother in tobacco cultivation.

We don't just make cigars; we cultivate our own raw material: San Andrés Black Tobacco . This unique variety, prized worldwide for its deep color and exceptional burn, is the soul of each of our cigars. At Monyaz, we guarantee excellence from seed to ash, offering a handcrafted product that has won over the most discerning palates, both in Mexico and abroad.

¿Qué materiales utilizas para crear tus piezas?

The excellence of our cigars originates from our own land. The star ingredient is San Andrés Black Tobacco, a unique variety that we cultivate ourselves in San Andrés Tuxtla, Veracruz. To craft each cigar, we carefully select three elements: the filler (the heart of the cigar), the binder (which provides structure), and the wrapper, the finest and most aesthetically pleasing leaf that adorns the cigar. Everything is assembled using traditional tools and a completely natural, plant-based glue.

¿Cómo es el proceso de elaboración de una pieza?

It's a transformative journey we call 'From Seed to Ash'. It all begins with the cultivation and topping of the plant to strengthen the leaves. After the manual harvest, the leaves undergo air curing for 60 days to lose moisture. Then comes fermentation and aging, where the tobacco rests for at least a year to refine its aroma. Finally, at the torcedor's table, the leaves are destemmed, pressed into molds, and hand-rolled with masterful precision.

¿Cuánto tiempo tarda en hacerse una pieza?

While a master hand-roller might only need a few minutes to shape a cigar, the actual process takes years. From planting the seed to the cigar being ready to be lit, at least 18 months pass. This time includes the plant's growth, the months of curing, and, most importantly, the year of aging necessary for the San Andrés Black Tobacco to reach its optimal flavor and burn.

¿Qué es lo más difícil o especial de tu trabajo?

What's most special is the family legacy. Carrying my grandmother's tradition in my blood and seeing our raw materials valued by international brands is a source of profound pride.

The most challenging aspect is patience and respect for the climate. Working with tobacco is like working with a living thing; we must carefully control the humidity and fermentation temperature to ensure a consistent flavor. At Monyaz, the most complex task is also our greatest pride: achieving a perfect burn for a product as robust as ours, even in humid climates.
