OAXACA

History of the CINCO HILOS Collective

CINCO HILOS was born from the meeting of five women from Oaxaca united by the same heritage, the same passion, and the same craft: Oaxacan drawn thread work . Each one contributes her story, her hands, and her time, but together they weave something greater than a garment: they weave identity, community, and cultural continuity.

The collective emerged as a way to preserve and dignify an ancestral technique passed down through generations. By joining forces, these five artisans decided to protect their knowledge, strengthen their craft, and create high-quality pieces where every thread tells a story and every detail reflects patience, precision, and a love for their work.

Oaxacan drawn thread work is a traditional textile technique that involves carefully removing threads from the fabric and then manually interlacing them to create unique figures, patterns, and transparencies. It is a completely artisanal process that requires experience, concentration, and many hours of meticulous work. No two pieces are alike, because each one reflects the artist's touch and style.

At CINCO HILOS , drawn thread work is not just decoration: it is language, it is living memory. Each garment is crafted slowly, respecting the pace of the artisanal process, resulting in elegant, fine, and durable textiles that honor their Oaxacan origins and engage with the present.

Today, CINCO HILOS represents the strength of collective women's work, the union of ancestral knowledge, and the conviction that Oaxacan textile art deserves to be valued in Mexico and around the world. Five women, five stories, one loom: CINCO HILOS .

Proceso Artesanal

¿Qué materiales utilizas para crear tus piezas?

The garments are made from muslin, linen, poplin, rayon, chiffon, or any fabric suitable for drawn thread embroidery. The drawn thread work and embroidery are done with silk thread, pearl cotton, crochet thread, cotton thread, and other materials.

¿Cómo es el proceso de elaboración de una pieza?

To make a garment, first the fabric is chosen, it is cut into pieces which are the bodice or breastplate, the chemise which is the body of the blouse or dress, the sleeves, and the cuffs.

¿Cuánto tiempo tarda en hacerse una pieza?

Typically, a garment is made by several people, as it would take one person about eight months to make one alone. One person is responsible for marking and doing the drawn thread work on the bodice and sleeves while the design is hand-drawn and embroidered on the nightgown. Once the nightgown is embroidered, the drawn thread work is completed, and the armholes are cut for the lace trim. After the drawn thread work on the sleeves and bodice is finished, the designs are drawn and embroidered. Finally, the lace is woven on the neckline and cuffs.

¿Qué es lo más difícil o especial de tu trabajo?

This is referring to a fine blouse.
