Artes Guerrero: Mastery in Colorín Wood

From the state of Guerrero , cradle of one of Mexico's most vibrant artisan traditions, Artes Guerrero presents its collection of hand-carved masks. Each piece is a testament to patience, respect for the land, and a technical mastery inherited through generations.

The Process: Nature's Time

The creation of a mask in Artes Guerrero is not a rushed process; it is a dialogue with the colorín wood (zompantle), chosen for its lightness and ease for detailed carving.

  • The Search for Raw Materials: Wood is a valuable and sometimes scarce resource. The process begins with a meticulous search in different villages, selecting logs with the exact thickness needed to bring the characters of our culture to life.
  • Carving and Detail: An artisan can carve between 2 and 3 pieces per day . It is preferable to work the wood when it is still "green," as this allows for a higher level of detail and a finer finish with less physical effort.
  • The Secret of Drying: The key to durability lies in waiting. A mask must be completely dry before decoration. If you work on damp wood, the piece will inevitably flake off the paste and paint.

Color and Tradition of Guerrero

Once the wood has rested and cured, the painting stage begins, which takes between 6 and 8 days . This dedication ensures that the colors and designs—characteristic of the dances and legends of Guerrero—remain vibrant and strong, transforming each mask into a work of art destined to transcend time.

¿Qué materiales utilizas para crear tus piezas?

Our masks are made from colorín wood, a very fine and resistant wood. For each piece, we use gouges, knives, and chainsaws to cut the wood to size and ensure a perfect fit.

¿Cómo es el proceso de elaboración de una pieza?

The production time is about 2 to 3 pieces per day. You have to wait for the wood to dry because sometimes it is green and needs to dry to obtain a better detail, making it a simpler and easier way of working.

¿Cuánto tiempo tarda en hacerse una pieza?

Painting a piece takes between 6 and 8 days, depending, since it is very important that the mask is dry; if it is green, it will spit out the paste and the paint.

¿Qué es lo más difícil o especial de tu trabajo?

Wood is difficult to obtain since it often has to be sought out; sometimes when it becomes scarce, it is bought in different towns, where the tree is already ready for its manufacture, with the thickness of the trunk being the main factor we look for.
